The Jewish synagogue stands in the midst of the Coptic churches. Once this synagogue was belonging to the Hanging Church but the Patriarch Mikhail III the 56 (fifty sixth pope) was forced to sell it to the Jews so as to be able to pay the taxes estimated by the governor Ahmed Ibn Tulun at the value of 20,000 gold Dinars annually. The Jews say about this synagogue that it goes back to the pre – Christ era, and that Moses the prophet lived in that area. If this is right it means that the old synagogue was destroyed.
